Lake Shore High School juniors, Logan Hawk and Dvaron Galloway, made it to states for wrestling. Both wrestlers fought their way through regionals, winning their state qualifying matches.
Wrestling does not come naturally to most people. It took hard work for both Hawk and Galloway to be able to make it all the way to the state tournament.
“I’ve been in the sport for maybe 8-9 years and why I started was mostly just to try it out. I didn’t know I would go to this level of commitment, but eventually I went into it,” says Hawk.
Hawk was trying out the sport, but soon realized he enjoyed it far more than he originally anticipated. His level of commitment is driving him to win throughout his high school years.
There are many obstacles wrestlers have to face.
Galloway says, “I got a lot of knee injuries and wrist injuries.”
While wrestling against a Lakeview wrestler at the MAC tournament, Galloway got headbutted in his front tooth. His tooth was severely injured, forcing him to get a root canal.
Schedules for state qualifiers can get intense.
Galloway explains, “It can get a little overwhelming at times, but I’ve been able to manage it pretty well.”
Hawk adds, “It’s hard to find schedules and practices right now because a lot of teams that are in this area.. aren’t.. the best.. and not many other teams made it to states like we did, so trying to find those groups is somewhat difficult..”
Schedules are different for every wrestler, however, when it comes to states, it gets way more competitive.
“…It’s way more competitive because we go to other schools and compete with their state qualifiers..so it gets very hard,” Galloway explains.
Galloway and Hawk get the chance to practice against other teams. As the other teams may not be the best, it still gets competitive because of everyone’s desire to win. They both have the commitment to win their state match, pushing through the rough practices.
Through their entire wrestling career, many wrestlers discover a move they enjoy most or do best. When asked what their takedowns were going to be, both boys replied with their favorite moves.
“My iconic double leg, like I always do,” Hawk states.
“A low single,” says Galloway.
Make sure to wish both Hawk and Galloway luck on their matches Friday and Saturday!
