Dan Mumbrue, favorite teacher among many, wins teacher of the year.
Mumbrue has been teaching at Lake Shore High School for 27 years and 31 in total. He has taught mostly Economics, Government, as well as AP Economics and Government. Although he has also taught psychology, practical law, and integrated social studies.
Cameron Whitcher, Senior, said, “I like Mr. Mumbrue because he is just a chill guy, and honestly one of the best teachers I’ve had. He connects to his students, and he’s one of the teachers that actually cares about his students instead of just teaching.”
Shorians have multiple reasons why they think Mumbrue was awarded teacher of the year.
Ava Kozak, Senior, said, “I think Mr. Mumbrue won because of his personality which is very friendly and caring. Also, because he is very respected by students and other teachers.”
Collin Kassin, Junior, said, “His ability to connect with students and make them feel welcomed in his classroom”
Steven Likins, Senior, said, “I think Mr. Mumbrue won teacher of the year because of his personality, he knows how to make kids like his class and he’s a good teacher on top of it.”
Students also have reasons why Mumbrue helped them succeed in his class.
Kozak said, “He explained things when I needed help, giving us class time to work, and preparing myself and other students to do well on the tests we had.”
Collin Kassin, Junior, said “He gave me the time of one on one, and explained it in a way I could understand, he was also interactive while teaching making it easier to learn.”
Likins added, “He helped me succeed by answering questions and explaining it in a way I could understand.”
Mumbrue, while initially baffled, had a few ideas why he may have received the prestigious award.
He said, “No idea. Teachers get to vote for teacher of the year. I think my enthusiasm and positivity probably helped. I also think that other teachers may recognize that students typically find my class to be a positive environment. But, I do not know for sure. There were no speeches given for teacher of the year. ha ha.”
Mumbrue speculates as to why all the students and fellow teachers like him.
He said, “I think it is that positive energy that I strive for. I want this to be a positive place, so I start with myself. Hopefully, being positive and upbeat rubs off on others and it spreads. That or maybe it is sauerkraut jokes.”
Mumbrue is a great teacher and loved by all, including students and teachers. His teacher of the year award is well deserved.
