In today’s world, it’s nearly impossible to imagine life without smartphones. We depend on them to stay connected with friends and family, keep up with news, and even for entertainment. However, what happens when these devices start interfering with our education? Are smartphones in the classroom hindering our ability to focus and learn effectively?
There has been growing discussion about a potential state-wide ban on phones in Michigan, with Governor Whitmer advocating for a stricter phone policy in schools.
One proposed solution is the use of the Yondr pouch system. This system involves placing phones in small, lockable pouches upon arriving at school, with the pouch remaining locked until the end of the day, although students can carry it with them. However, concerns have been raised about student safety, as some argue that banning phones could pose risks in emergencies.
On the other hand, People who agree with the ban believe this system could help students focus more on their studies and less on their phones. To better understand the impact, both students and faculty at Lakeshore High School were asked about their thoughts on the issue.
Dr. Diponio, Superintendent of Lake Shore High School, stated in LSHS Video Productions’ Youtube Channel that. “ Kids are accessing social media, games, and sending text messages to one another, and a variety of other things going on which is a complete distraction from the learning process, which contributes to other issues we see in school.”
Lukas Storbeck, a Lake Shore High School sophomore, says, “ I do think it takes away the freedom at Lake Shore, but students will become more productive from it because instead of being able to go on their phones, they will be more focused on their work.”
Ariana Anno, a junior at Lake Shore High School, says, “I don’t think it’s a good idea, considering it takes away students’ freedom. Students also require their phones in order to be reached by their parents/guardians as well as others in the case of an accident or emergency. I believe there are better solutions to the phone policies with students.”
In conclusion, the debate over phone bans in schools shows how tricky it is to balance technology, learning, and student safety. While systems like the Yondr pouch can help reduce distractions and keep students focused, it’s important to also think about the need for phones in emergencies and the freedom students should have.
