Wrestling With Whether To Wrestle?
October 28, 2022
Steve Hendershot, the varsity wrestling coach here at Lake Shore High School, is very ecstatic about the upcoming wrestling season.
Hendershot explains his reasoning for coming to Lake Shore, he states, “I came to Lake Shore, Funny Story is, my nephews went here, one of them graduated, a year before I started here in 2017, and they wrestled, and they weren’t very good. I didn’t understand why Lake Shore wasn’t very good when they have everything to be good, it leads behind their high school athletics and everything, so, it was actually at my nephew’s graduation party, there was a kid from the team and I was talking to them and said they needed a coach. So, at the time, I sent Mr. Hartley an email, and I had said if there’s an opening, I would love to try and start a team here.”
Hendershot goes on to reveal how long he’s been coaching before arriving here at Lake Shore Public Schools, saying, “I coached at Roseville, for about 10 years, I got out of college in 2004, so, from about 2004 to 2012, I was at Roseville. Then, I took about six years off, I did a year at Clawson, then, I came here to Lake Shore.”
Hendershot talks about what he looks forward to as the wrestling coach here. He said, “I’m excited about this upcoming season! We’ve won our league the last 2 years, we are moving up in the league, and we won our district for the first time in 20 years, On top of that, I get excited about teaching kids to wrestle, so, I’m always looking for new kids to join, and we take anybody from all sizes, from 100 pounds, all the way up to 280 pounds so, I’m always looking for new kids, and we don’t cut anybody, everybody has a shot.”
Finally, Hendershot talks about how he can incorporate girls into the wrestling program. He gives this explanation, “I’m encouraging all girls that want to come out, to come out they are pushing it huge across the country, in Michigan here, we started the girl’s state tournament last season, they’re adding a girl’s state county tournament this season, they’re doing a whole separate girl’s division. They don’t have to wrestle boys anymore, and I’m very excited about it. We have two former Shorians wrestling in college right now, girls, and Isobel Wharff returning, she was a state qualifier for the girls last year, so I’m very excited about girls wrestling.”
In summary, Hendershot is very excited about Lake Shore’s wrestling team this winter season. As he stated above, “We’ve won our league the last 2 years, we are moving up in the league, and we won our district for the first time in 20 years, On top of that, I get excited about teaching kids to wrestle, so, I’m always looking for new kids to join, and we take anybody from all sizes, from 100 pounds, all the way up to 280 pounds so, I’m always looking for new kids, and we don’t cut anybody, everybody has a shot.”
