The Black Student Union (BSU) is a newly established organization dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion while creating a safe space for discussions on race and social justice and activities that engage all Lake Shore students.
As the BSU mission statement emphasizes, “Pushing past agendas, raising awareness for those who can’t see beyond the walls, and amplifying our voices; this is how we’ll inspire change.”
The BSU is focused on inspiring positive change and encouraging students to embrace their true selves while promoting equality for all.
Carrington Barnes, the President and founder of the Black Student Union shares the inspiration behind her decision to lead the organization.
She said, “I chose to take on the role of BSU President because I founded the organization, and I wanted to have a say in its direction. It’s not about controlling anyone, but ensuring that the vision I had when I created it is carried out. Since this initiative began with me, it felt only right that I take on the responsibility of leading and helping it grow.”
Barnes’ vision for the BSU extends beyond the present generation; she is committed to ensuring the organization serves as a resource for future students as well.
Barnes said, “Some of my goals for the BSU this year are to host more fundraising events and create inclusive activities that everyone can enjoy. Giving back is something I’m truly passionate about, so I want to focus on doing more community work and finding ways for the BSU to have a positive impact both on campus and beyond.”
Barnes is dedicated to fostering a sense of community through events that not only benefit the school but also give back to those who support the BSU.
“Maintaining the BSU as a safe and inclusive space is paramount,” Barnes emphasizes. “I focus on being there for everyone. One of the most important things you can do is ensure that people feel heard and supported, especially in a predominantly white school where it’s easy to feel isolated. Listening is the first step—not just as students, but as people. From there, we take action, whether it’s brainstorming ideas to help members overcome challenges or finding solutions together to build a stronger community.”
The BSU is committed to not only promoting inclusion but also maintaining an open, supportive environment where students of all backgrounds feel welcome.
Barnes also highlights the personal challenges of leadership. She said, “One of the biggest hurdles I’ve faced as president is managing stress. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed when you’re in charge, as there are many responsibilities to juggle. I’ve learned to overcome this by leaning on others and using the resources available to me. Reaching out for help has made a significant difference, and I am deeply grateful for the support I’ve received from others. Many are willing to step up, and that has made managing the stress much more manageable.”
While balancing the responsibilities of high school life with the demands of her leadership role is not always easy, Barnes finds strength in the support of her fellow BSU members and classmates, which ensures the organization operates at its highest standard.
The BSU engages in a collaborative process to plan future events, collecting input from students and executive board members alike. “We gather ideas for future events and meetings by polling the student body, taking suggestions, and ensuring we listen to both our audience and the executive board. Collaboration is key, and we strive to make our events reflect the interests and passions of the entire school community.”
A central aspect of the BSU’s planning is its bi-weekly meetings, where ideas for events and fundraising efforts are discussed. These meetings are also an open space where all members are invited to share their thoughts and contribute to the organization’s direction.
One of the most anticipated events is the BSU’s upcoming Movie Night, which Barnes is particularly excited about. She said, “The event I’m most excited about is our upcoming Movie Night! We’re planning to use the money we raise to give back to Black elementary schools, which makes it even more special. I think it’s going to be a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see people come out, enjoy themselves, and support a great cause.”
The BSU’s Movie Night promises to be a lively and enjoyable event that allows students and families to come together while giving back to the community.
Despite being in its early stages, the Black Student Union has already achieved significant milestones and continues to organize events that make all students feel included and supported. The BSU remains committed to fostering a positive atmosphere while welcoming new ideas and perspectives. Looking forward, the BSU aims to continue its work for many generations of students to come.
