The Black Student Union (BSU) at Lake Shore High School continues to thrive, thanks to the dedication of its members, like Kehara Shabazz. As the social media representative, Shabazz has brought energy and creativity to the organization, using her passion for content creation to help amplify its mission.
When asked what motivated her to join the BSU, Shabazz shared, “I felt it was a much-needed union at Lake Shore. I’ve always loved creating content on YouTube and TikTok, so I thought being the social media representative would be a fun and perfect role.”
Shabazz recently played a key part in planning BSU’s movie night, an event designed to bring the community together and raise funds for a meaningful cause. Her main goal for the event? Ensuring it was well-advertised. Thanks to her efforts, the event gained significant attention across social media, drawing in a crowd of students and staff alike.
Although Shabazz couldn’t attend the event, she reflected on what could be improved for future activities saying, “One challenge I encountered was staying organized.”
To overcome this, she plans to use a digital planner to manage her responsibilities more effectively.
The success of the movie night also highlighted the BSU’s commitment to its mission. Shabazz added, “The event helped us raise money for a good cause, which directly supports the goals of the BSU.”
The money raised from the movie night was given to black elementary schools in Detroit and less privileged areas in the community.
As the BSU continues to grow, Shabazz’s enthusiasm and dedication are helping to set the stage for more engaging events and impactful initiatives. “I’m excited to keep building our presence and connecting with the community,” she said.
With members like Kehara Shabazz leading the way, the future of Lake Shore’s BSU looks bright.
