While high school can be the best four years of your life or maybe the worst, many students face different challenges throughout their high school experience.
Students at Lake Shore High School share their challenges and reflections about what helped them excel throughout their high school journey.
A big challenge in high school for many students is turning in assignments on time and keeping up with homework, while they have six more classes they have homework in as well.
Senior Haley Perez gives her insight on her experience with these challenges, saying, “Something that has helped me stay on track and succeed throughout high school would be, managing my time wisely, making sure that if I get homework, just do it right away and not procrastinate, and working with other people has always helped me too.”
Junior Amaria Goodwin also states, “Something that has helped me stay on track since my freshman year is getting a journal and journaling the things I need to do, like my homework assignments and checking them off when they are done.” Goodwin says, “Always turn in your assignments. Even if it is not good work, you can still get points on it that can help your grades.”
Perez also goes on to share and describe her experience, saying, “Something I have overcome is I used to be very stressed out about missing assignments and my workload, but I learned to manage my time better and get to know my teachers.”
Many students may be socially awkward and uncomfortable talking to the teacher or asking questions. Miss Perez shares how she feels about the teachers and what they can do to help you.
She says, “You should always be transparent with your teachers too, because then they will understand you better and give you more compassion and be more trusting of you because they know that you are a good student and that you genuinely try in school.”
“Another good way to stay involved is to get into extracurricular activities like clubs, sports, music, anything that you are interested in,” says Perez.
When coming into high school, freshmen are still new to exploring their opportunities and abilities in becoming adults. They tend to have more fun and make memories with their friends, and their biggest focus is often finding the right friend groups that they are going to spend the next four years of high school with.
Perez expresses, “Advice I would give to future students is do not take things too personally and surround yourself with like-minded people.”
Perez also says, “Try your best not to get involved in drama and find the right friends who you know are genuinely there for you, you only need a few good friends who show that they care about you and that’s much more worth it.”
“What matters is quality over quantity when it comes to making friends, spending time with them, and focusing on the good things in life and making the best out of your high school career.”
