Constructing Our Future

Constructing Our Future

Shorians may have seen people with construction uniforms around the school. Maybe you’ve heard construction noises during class. You may have wondered, “Why are they doing all of this, and when will the school look normal again?”

In 2022, the residents of St. Clair Shores voted to pass a bond for Lake Shore Public Schools to receive 66.7 million dollars to renovate their schools. Lake Shore High School received 17.4 million dollars, the highest any district school received.

The exciting thing is that the Lake Shore cafeteria will be almost three times the size it is right now. There will be a hangout area for students that features a dome-like area for students to hang out in or for teachers to bring their classes to. It will also connect to the new Shorian Shop.

Sophomore, Ashley Geib, is especially interested in this new hangout area located on the 13-mile side of the building. Although she is looking forward to this, she said, “I miss seeing the old main hallway every day.”

Lake Shore High School is projected to finish in early 2025, meaning, unfortunately, the class of 2024 will not be able to enjoy the new and improved school.

Senior, Mame Diouf, said, “It’s disappointing because they have been hyping it up since last year when I was a junior, and I really wanted to see it.”

Another new and innovative thing coming is a Shorie display personally designed by Johnny Wujek. Dr. Joseph DiPonio, the superintendent, is looking forward to this new Shorie look.

Some students have been wondering what the school is going to look like when they return in the fall. Dr. Todd Stevens, assistant principal, said, “Everything should be done or almost done when school starts.”

Other students are upset that Lake Shore is down a bathroom, or to get to the other side of school they have to go through the cafeteria (which can get busy). The good news is that once construction is done, both the passageway and bathroom will be back in use!

Shorians are looking forward to the school looking normal again, and it will definitely be something to think about when returning to school this fall!
