Stay Busy in This Blizzard of a Break

Irene Spano, Senior Editor

The winter season seems to never be full of fun, but more so about whining about wanting it to be summer. However, winter can be just as fun as summer, if not more. There are tons of things to do, and with Mid Winter Break starting February 14th also Valentine’s Day running till February 18th it is the perfect time to start some winter fun!

  1. Despite being the most obvious thing, having some fun in the snow is quite honestly overlooked, and one of the best ways to enjoy the snow is by going sledding.  There are tons of places in Michigan to do these activities as well. For sledding, there is Spindler Park off of Little Mack and Stevens in St. Clair Shores, Huron Park off of  Kelly and Frazo in Roseville, a hill behind Mt. Clemens Ice Arena on Groesbeck in Mt. Clemens, Civic Center Park Madison Heights on 13 mile in Madison Heights, and Civic Center Sled Hill on Romeo Plank in Clinton Township. These places are all close by with one even in Lake Shore’s own community and if you don’t have a sled there are plenty of things that can be used as a sled. An intertube, an inflatable chair, and even a portable folding table. So, get some friends together, find something to use, and go sledding! I guarantee you’ll have a blast!
  2. Skiing and snowboarding are another way to enjoy the snow! Locations to enjoy these activities are a little farther out than the sledding hills, but it is definitely worth the drive. You can go to Mt. Holly Ski & Snowboard Resort in Holly, MI; Swiss Valley Ski & Snowboard Area in Jones, MI; Nichols Ski and Snowboard in Dearborn MI; and Pine Knob Ski Resort Inc. in Clarkston MI. There is a bit of price for this experience, but it is worth it for the fun and memories you will make. It also is a great thing to do with your family and friends. So, once again, get a group, go to one of these places, and have a blast!
  3. The summer Olympics may be this year, but it doesn’t mean you can’t brush up on your figure skating skills. Head over to the Civic Ice Arena in St. Clair Shores to channel your inner Michelle Kwan or maybe even Tonya Harding, but then your outing may get cut short. Skating isn’t just a solo activity either it’s even better with a group of fun. So, if you need a little help you can rely on your friend. But, in actuality, you will all end up falling, but hey at least you can laugh at yourself together.
  4. If you would like to stay inside in this chilly weather, opt for a fun baking day. Baking chocolate chip cookies or cupcakes is always a fun time! Whether it’s a mix or homemade, it’s still something super sweet to do while staying warm. A few recipes you can try are Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies which is a classic and something that everybody loves. Just as well Vanilla Cupcakes can turn mid-winter break to a celebration. I mean why not celebrate Cupid’s birthday?
  5. After you bake some delicious treats, a movie marathon is a perfect way to relax. With Valentine’s Day kicking off break, it’s a great excuse to watch some romantic comedies. Some great ones to watch are 27 Dresses which is directed by Anne Fletcher (who happens to be a Lake Shore grad), A Walk to Remember, The Notebook, Dirty Dancing, Pretty In Pink, Love Rosie, Crazy Rich Asians, Bridesmaids, Set It Up, Say Anything, Dumplin and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. If you aren’t feeling in the lovey mood, but more into action and violence watching mood, then some movies for you are, The Godfather, Wonder Woman, White Chicks, Bad Boys, and 21 Jump Street. No matter what movie or movies you watch, it is sure to be a cozy and warm experience on a chilly winter break.

Breaks in school are what the majority of students look forward to, but when we actually get time off, suddenly all the ideas of what to do suddenly disappear from memory. So, if you want to maximize this Mid Winter Break then do one of the activities listed, or if feeling extras adventurous, complete them all. Have a snowtastic time this break!
